Course Description:

Our intuitions, our inner knowings, are guiding forces. They propel our forward actions and trust in ourselves. They are our creative power. In times of tumult, it is easier to lose ourselves. Writing helps us return. In this five-week generative writing workshop, participants will write poetry that more deeply connects them to their roots, lineages, intuition, and creative power. They will learn strategies and practices to listen more deeply to themselves, their own body wisdom, and craft their writing from that place.

Writers we will read include Audre Lorde, Gloria Anzaldúa, Toni Morrison, Eve L. Ewing, and more. We will discuss the political necessity of our creative voices and learn body-based practices for resourcing ourselves in times of turmoil. Each week, you will write a new piece. Together, we will return to the joy of writing, outside of industry. All writing levels and experiences are welcome.

This course is open to all self-identified BIPOC writers.

Note: Sessions are meant to be experienced live, and will not be recorded to preserve privacy and encourage participation.

Finally make time to write. Do it in supportive community.

Apply to join here by Tues, May 28th, 11:59pm ET:

This course includes:

— Four LIVE class meetings: These classes begin with an opening circle, followed by thoughtful talks and writing prompts that revolve around connecting more deeply to our roots, lineages, intuition, and creative power. There is uninterrupted writing time in every session, plus a low-stakes, supportive environment to share your work if you choose to!

— One 1:1 coaching session with River to talk through writing roadblocks and/or questions related to creating a writing life, trusting and listening to your intuition, writing opportunities, & more (entirely shaped & decided by you!)

Holistic healing and anxiety-reducing practices to ground yourself when you write to carry with you for years to come.

“Grow Home” assignments to work on and complete each week. This can include writing prompts, pieces, and healing tools to practice.

An intentionally cultivated community of BIPOC storytellers who can grow as readers and champions of your work.
